What is Aṣtanga Yoga?

Aṣtanga Yoga is the ancient eight limbed science of Self realization described in the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali. Patanjali’s Aṣtanga Yoga provides a step by step process of the science of self realization and the actualization of our full potential. Addressing all facets of the human being, its foundation lies in the Yama and Niyama, the moral and social codes of conduct along with the practices of āsana, (yogik posture). In the exploration of Vinyasa the breath is synchronized with movement and the body, mind and psyche become aligned reintegrating the mind/body complex. Through regular and consistent practice, this internal alignment of thought, deed and word brings the practitioner into sukhava bodhe, unparalleled well-being. The practices increase the circulation of oxygen-rich blood, nourishing and detoxifying the internal organs, musculature, cardiovascular, immune, endocrine, digestive, reproductive and nervous systems, as well as unloading the mind and emotional body of any stress. Increasing flexibility and strength as well as expanding one’s capacity to be at peace, Aṣtanga Yoga improves coordination, stamina, concentration, and clarity of the mind. Benefiting and balancing both the internal and external bodies, practitioners experience a deepened sense of wellbeing and contentment, mentally, physically, and spiritually.

Patañjali defines practice in his Yoga Sutra as:

Tatra sthitau yatno abyāsaḥ

Practice is the effort to be steady, and the steadiness of that effort.
